DESCRIPTION:Join us for Backyard Beats in the courtyard of the Health and Rehabilitation Center of Milwaukee Catholic Home at 2330 N. Prospect Ave.  This month we are featuring the Sliphorn Jazz Band. \nSliphorn is a dancer’s dream band. While some songs feature vocals\, the group’s ensemble sound and blend of instruments is the primary focus\, never putting one player in the spotlight too long. Their unique sound is not quite big band\, but fuller than a typical combo. Styles range from traditional jazz (where there’s a washboard\, there’s a party) to swing-era standards and down-and-dirty blues\, with the band’s namesake trombone coloring its signature sound. Sliphorn is accustomed to longer sets and is there for the dancers\, providing an eclectic mix with something for everyone.

In her presentation\, Sister Marianne will share some of those moments when she was “Surprised by Grace” in her own life and invite those attending to recognize and be grateful for those God moments in their lives when they were ‘Surprised by Grace.’ \nSister Marianne Kempa is a School Sister of Notre Dame. She was born and grew up in Milwaukee and is the middle child in a family of three girls. As a School Sister of Notre Dame\, Sister Marianne has served in schools and parishes in the Milwaukee Archdiocese and Madison diocese for 55 years. She also worked with the Sisters of her community at Notre Dame of Elm Grove for 5 years as the Minister of Pastoral Care. Sister Marianne currently is serving as the Vice President of Mission and Catholic Identity at Notre Dame School of Milwaukee\, a sponsored ministry of the School Sisters of Notre Dame\, a Catholic school with 647 students in grades K3 thru 8th grade. She also accompanies others as a Spiritual Guide in spiritual direction and retreats. Sister Marianne has a Masters Degree in Pastoral Studies from St. Francis Seminary and a Masters in Administration from Cardinal Stritch University\, as well as being certified in Spiritual Direction through the Siena Center. SUMMARY:MCH-Ada String Trio: "Vienna and Bohemia"
DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived and worked in the musical hub of Europe during his time\, the great city of Vienna. The Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 22 in A Major\, K. 305\, by W.A. Mozart begins the program with its jaunty rhythms and cheerful melodies. Bohemian composer Leopold Jansa wrote numerous chamber music works after abandoning his study of the law in Vienna and became an established performer and teacher in that great cultural city. We will perform his Duo for Violin and Viola in G major Op. 70\, No. 2. Fellow Bohemian composer Antonin Dvořák was devoted to his homeland during its transition after World War I into the Czech Republic. The program will conclude with his soulful Terzetto in C Major\, Op. 74\, for two violins and viola. \nThe performers Addison Teng\, Amy Hess\, and Paul Hauer met while studying music at Oberlin Conservatory. Life and opportunities have brought them to the Midwest\, with Addison and Amy living in Chicago and Paul in Milwaukee. Their achievements and accomplishments include their current positions in the Lyric Opera of Chicago\, Grant Park Musical Festival\, DePaul University\, the Music Institute of Chicago\, The Fulton Music Society\, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

SUMMARY:Catholic Ecology Center: The Art of Drawing Birds
DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy watching birds? Ever wondered if you could learn how to draw and paint them? This is your lucky chance!! Participants will learn how to see and draw from real life bird mounts. This gives the individual a better understanding of each bird’s makeup and gets to see all the details up close. Not to mention they stand still so we can draw and paint them! In these sessions\, participants will learn how to correctly see and render proportions of an individual bird\, capture the line of movement and learn how to identify several feather groupings. We will start by drafting rough drafts to capture the overall movement of the bird. Then we will transfer our image to fine quality paper where we will apply watercolor painting techniques. At the end of the session individuals will have gained an appreciation for seeing and have a work of art to be proud of. All skill levels are encouraged. DESCRIPTION:Sliphorn is a dancer’s dream band. While some songs feature vocals\, the group’s ensemble sound and blend of instruments is the primary focus\, never putting one player in the spotlight too long. Their unique sound is not quite big band\, but fuller than a typical combo.
