SUMMARY:MCH-Fall Retreat-with Fr. Doug Leonhardt\, S.J. "Finding God in Our Later Years"
DESCRIPTION:Together\, we’ll examine how aging can be a sacred season of rediscovery\, where God’s presence becomes clearer through memory\, gratitude\, and surrender. We’ll discuss the unique challenges and blessings that come with this stage of life\, and how spiritual practices\, community\, and personal reflection can bring renewed meaning\, peace\, and connection with the Divine. Each day will begin at 9:45 AM and culminate with Rosary at 3:30 PM and Mass at 4 PM.  There will be dinner following Mass on the 26th and lunch is provided each day onsite. \nFr. Doug Leonhardt\, S.J. grew up in Milwaukee and graduated from Marquette High in 1956. He entered the Jesuits right after high school and was ordained in 1969. He has held administrative positions at Marquette High\, Marquette University\, and in the Society of Jesus.  He was also Pastor of Gesu Church in Milwaukee and the Jesuit Superior of the Jesuits in Assisted Living at St. Camillus. For the past five years he has worked part-time in Adult Faith Formation at Marquette High with staff\, faculty\, and alumni\, as well as leading retreats and being the spiritual director for priests\, seminarians and laypersons. \nRetreat is Thursday\, September 25th and Friday\, September 26th.  Please note this is being held at Milwaukee Catholic Home\, The Residence at 2462.

DESCRIPTION:Session five: Senator McCarthy \nMcCarthy attempted to gain traction as a junior senator from 1947-50 but had little success. He was ignored and disliked\, not only by Democrats in the US Senate\, but also by his fellow Republicans. The Cold War created great fear for many Americans. On February 9\, 1950\, McCarthy burst into national prominence by claiming that he had the names of 205 known communists in the US State Department. Joe McCarthy was lying\, as he did not have the name of even one communist. He would nevertheless begin investigations into communist subversion\, and he ruined the lives of hundreds of Americans by accusing them of being communists. McCarthyism was born. \n

DESCRIPTION:Session six: Demagogue and Downfall \nSenator McCarthy’s communist subversion investigations in the US Government continued into the Eisenhower presidency. Eisenhower detested his fellow Republican Joe McCarthy and wanted to destroy McCarthyism once and for all. The junior senator from Wisconsin was warned by Eisenhower’s vice-president Richard Nixon to tone down his investigations\, but McCarthy refused and decided instead to begin an investigation into the US Army. The Army-McCarthy Hearings in 1954 were watched on television by millions of Americans. The hearings ultimately exposed and destroyed the demagogue McCarthy\, leading to his censure in the US Senate by the conclusion of the year. McCarthy’s Red Scare came to an end\, and the Wisconsin senator would die from alcoholism just two years later at the age of 48. The movement represented a fundamental abuse of the rights of countless American citizens. \n

DESCRIPTION:Art Historian and MCH Resident Priscilla Camilli will present a 2-part series on Modern Sculpture. The modern era of sculpture began with the work of August Rodin in the late 1800s. Before this time\, sculpture mostly showed realistic human figures\, used natural materials like stone or bronze\, and aimed to make the subjects look perfect or ideal. These sculptures were often life-size. But with Rodin and the artists who followed\, Sculptors began exploring abstract shapes\, geometric forms\, and non-traditional materials-including metals and industrial objects. New ways of creating sculpture appeared\, like using found objects or building with parts not originally meant for art. Instead of just solid forms\, artists began to include open space as part of the sculpture itself. Join us for an interesting 2-part series as we explore this evolutionary time in modern sculpture.
