Concluding with the transformative amendments that abolished slavery and secured women’s suffrage\, this timely and engaging series offers meaningful insight into the Constitution’s enduring influence as we mark this historic milestone. \nDescription for Today’s Lecture:The Constitution: Present and Future \nThe Constitution was to be a living and breathing document\, open to amendments as the nation grew and prospered. The document remains flexible and open to interpretation in the present day. The framers of the Constitution realized in 1787 that document was far from perfect\, but if the balance of power remained between the Legislative\, Executive\, and Judicial branches\, all would be well. The greatest fear the founding fathers had in Philadelphia was the potential for a demagogue who would abuse the balance of power which could then create enormous challenges for the constitutional federal republic.

DESCRIPTION:Take and Eat\, Take and Drink: Living in a ‘s’acramental World \nSt. Ignatius of Loyola encouraged us to find God in all things. This short retreat will invite participants to deepen their awareness of God’s presence in everyday life and recognize the ways He reaches out to us through ordinary moments. Our senses are inroads to the Divine\, but we must train ourselves to slow down\, pay attention\, and seek the Lord as He reveals Himself through the world around us.\nEach day will begin at 9:45 AM and culminate with Rosary at 3:30 PM and Mass at 4 PM.  Lunch is included. A communal meal following Mass on Sept. 11 is offered for those who choose to attend. \nFr. Tom Doyle\, S.J. is a native of Lima\, Ohio. He earned his B.S. in Medical Technology from Marquette University in 1980 and worked for five years in the laboratory at Milwaukee Children’s Hospital before entering the Jesuits in St. Paul\, Minnesota\, in 1985. After professing his vows in 1987\, he went on to earn a pontifical licentiate in philosophy from Gonzaga University and a Master of Divinity from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. \nMuch of Tom’s Jesuit life has been focused on secondary education\, serving at both Marquette University High School and St. John’s Jesuit High School in Toledo\, Ohio. He also spent four years as a priest in residence at the Cloisters on the Platte retreat center in Gretna\, Nebraska. He currently serves as a student chaplain at Marquette High and is the house manager of the Arrupe House Jesuit Community near Marquette University’s campus. \nRetreat is Sept. 10th-11th. DESCRIPTION:In this 6-part series Dr. Tim Crain explores the Vietnam War and its lasting impact on American history\, politics\, and society\, while also examining the Watergate scandal and the presidency of Richard Nixon. The presentation connects these pivotal events to reveal a period of profound conflict and change in the United States\, offering historical context and insight into how Vietnam\, Watergate\, and Nixon shaped the nation’s course. \nPart 1: October 7: French Imperialism in Vietnam\, 1880–1945 This lecture examines the origins of modern Vietnamese nationalism within the context of French colonial rule from the late nineteenth century through World War II. It explores how France consolidated control over Indochina\, reorganized Vietnam’s economy around plantation agriculture and resource extraction\, and imposed cultural and administrative systems that reshaped Vietnamese society. The course will analyze the social consequences of colonialism\, including land dispossession\, taxation\, labor exploitation\, and the growth of a Western-educated elite. Special attention will be given to early nationalist movements\, reform efforts\, and the rise of revolutionary leaders such as Ho Chi Minh. The lecture concludes with the impact of Japanese occupation during World War II and the political vacuum that set the stage for the August Revolution of 1945.

Students will assess U.S. nation-building efforts\, military advising\, and economic assistance programs aimed at containing communism under the Eisenhower administration. The lecture also examines internal opposition within South Vietnam\, including Buddhist unrest and the early insurgency that would evolve into the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong). Emphasis is placed on how Cold War ideology shaped American commitments.
