A Beautiful Collaboration: Art Meets Wisdom at Trinity Woods

At Trinity Woods, we believe in the power of community and connection. This December, our residents had the joy of participating in an intergenerational collaboration with Mount Mary University art therapy students from the course Art for the Helping Professions.

The project, originally established years ago by Sister Patty Rass, SSND, was recently revived by one of her former students, now a faculty member in Mount Mary’s art therapy department. The process began earlier in the semester when 23 residents, aged 74 to 101, were invited to reflect on the theme of “aging.”

Their writings expressed profound insights about transition, loss, pain, and death, balanced by reflections on peace, gratitude, hope, and even a touch of humor. The honesty and depth in their words offered a glimpse into the complex and beautiful journey of aging. Each poem or story was given to a student with the challenge of creating an art piece as a heartfelt response to the message conveyed.

A few weeks later, the students returned to Trinity Woods to deliver their artwork to the residents. Over hot cocoa and cookies, the group gathered to share their creations and engage in lively conversations. They discussed not only the poetry and art but also their shared interests and passions. The wisdom of our residents met the creativity of the students, resulting in a profound and joyful exchange of ideas and emotions.

The event was more than just a presentation; it was a celebration of the connection between generations. The students were inspired by the wisdom of the residents, and the residents were touched by the thoughtfulness of the students’ responses. The shared experience was a powerful reminder of how art and storytelling can bring people together.

The success of this collaboration has prompted many involved to request that it becomes an annual tradition. We’re already looking forward to seeing what next year will bring!

Special thanks to Sister Patty Rass, SSND, and the Mount Mary University art therapy team for making this meaningful exchange possible.
