Honoring the Heartbeat of a Nation
Why Do Americans Celebrate Labor Day? Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday in September, is more than just a long weekend marking the end of summer. It is a…
Along with a commitment to provide outstanding care for our residents, Trinity Senior Services also is dedicated to the protection and care for our natural environment. We strive to prioritize responsible practices for sustainable senior living.
As a resident of one of our senior living communities—Milwaukee Catholic Home or Trinity Woods—you become a part of Trinity Senior Services’ sustainable farm-to-table program, sourced by Clare Gardens. This land in nearby Dodge County produces food for several senior living and retirement communities. It includes an orchard and perennial fruits, vegetables, hens, beehives and the composting of food waste from share partners and provides over 30,000 pounds of produce annually.
Clare Gardens also is a resource for our educational and social programming. For example, residents have opportunities to learn about composting, no-till farming practices and the effective use of cover crops. These common and proven farming methods eliminate the need for herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers.
This program, a partnership between Trinity Senior Services and the Catholic Ecology Center, is modeled after Community Supported Agriculture farms, or CSAs, which provides customers with regular deliveries of locally grown products. Beyond Milwaukee Catholic Home and Trinity Woods, produce from Clare Gardens is available to the public at the Catholic Ecology Center’s seasonal farmstand and farm-to-table events.
As a testament to our sustainable senior living efforts, Trinity Woods earned a green infrastructure grant from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District in 2021. That funding helped us work to protect Lake Michigan through water management practices. Trinity Woods features porous pavement, bioswales and deep-rooted native plants to absorb rainwater and prevent problematic runoff. Check out the details.
As of April, 2024 we are producing our own solar energy thanks to partnership with the Catholic Ecology Center and Enphase Energy. The data we’re gathering will allow us to quantify even more of the positive impacts we’re making in the spirit of environmental stewardship.
Out of all the communities we looked at, we chose to live here in part because of how they designed it to help our environment.

Late summer’s challenges of heat, fatigue, and mosquitoes are balanced by the gratitude for abundant harvests; it’s essential to pause and reflect on our work’s deeper purpose, honoring the land, community, and ethical responsibilities in sustainable food production, as emphasized by Aldo Leopold and Christ.
This month our Farm Manager, Anna Metscher, highlights the exceptional work being done at Clare Gardens. Gone are the cool, dewy morning harvests with salad greens and herbs. They’ve been…
