Clare Gardens Corner: January 2025

Farm Manager, Anna Metscher, highlights the exceptional work being done at Clare Gardens.

As the snow piles high and long shadows stretch into the lengthening days, January is a special time on the farm. While the land—and the farmers—take a well-earned rest, not everything lies dormant. The farm remains a hub of activity, with storage-packed shares continuing to make their way to our partners. Onions, carrots, beets, cabbage, and squash that were harvested, cleaned, and inventoried back in October and November, remain just as sweet and delicious as the day they were picked.

Another exciting aspect of midwinter is diving into the bounty of seed catalogs, searching for marvelous new varieties to try. Will this tomato be the perfect addition to July salads? Will that cucumber offer better disease resistance? Could this pumpkin mature earlier in case of an early frost? Might this lettuce withstand the summer heat a bit longer? Each selection is a thoughtful consideration of what conditions the upcoming season may bring and how best to match crops to meet those needs.

With that in mind, we’re thrilled to introduce some new flowers, herbs, and vegetables for 2025—fresh companions to our tried-and-true favorites from seasons past. As we dream our way into another bountiful year, the promise of growth and renewal fuels our anticipation for what’s ahead at Clare Gardens!
