February 5: The Cold War and the 1960’s

John Kennedy inherited much of the Eisenhower Administration’s Cold War policy in 1961. The Kennedy Administration expanded US involvement in Vietnam, as well as Cuba. The Bay of Pigs fiasco in Cuba served to heighten Cold War tension, and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 brought the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear war. Lyndon Johnson became president following John Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, and although Johnson’s focus was on domestic policy, his administration would soon be overwhelmed by the war in Vietnam.
