Celebrating Women’s History Month: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

This March, Trinity Senior Services took the time to celebrate Women’s History Month across all our campuses. Dedicated to recognizing the incredible contributions women have made throughout history, we honor all the many women who have shaped society in ways both big and small.

As it relates to the history of TSS, we look back to the early 1900s and the Marquette Women’s League. This influential organization of Catholic women, active from 1910-1973, was founded by Anna Marie Hackett, a prominent Milwaukee philanthropist and community leader. Recognizing the need for a residence catering to Milwaukee’s elderly community, the Marquette Women’s League incorporated Milwaukee Catholic Home for the Aged on June 28th, 1913.

The original building was a home donated by Anna Cudahy, wife of meat-packing mogul Patrick Cudahy, and opened its doors on October 1st, 1915. At a time when women weren’t even allowed to vote, this visionary group had the ambition to start a company that would become a multicampus organization, caring for countless senior citizens for more than a century. Read on to find out how each of our campuses celebrated Women’s History Month.

Our Lady of the Angels played a bag toss game, with each player’s turn stopping to discuss major women in history. Great discussions were had about a few influential women in residents’ own Orders – Blessed Thersa Gerhardinger – Mother Caroline Friess, SSND, and Emma Franziska Höll – Sister Mary Alexia to name a few.

Trinity Woods residents had a few opportunities to catch movie screenings that featured strong women.  At Milwaukee Catholic Home, residents enjoyed an All-Women’s Choir performance and held a Women’s Tea. Residents were invited to bring a photo of an inspirational woman in their lives to share with the group, celebrating not only achievements that have impacted our society as a whole, but also the profound influence one woman can have on another.
