January 15: The Cold War: 1945-50
The United States and Harry Truman strongly opposed Russian domination of Eastern Europe. Initially, the American people believed the Soviet Union could be trusted in the postwar era. However, all of that changed following the Soviet detonation of the atomic bomb and the fall of China to communism in 1949. The rise of Wisconsin Senator Joe McCarthy added to the chaos of the period, as Cold War tension continued to escalate.
