January 22: The Cold War and the 1950’s

The Korean War dominated US Cold War efforts at the start of the decade. The conflict in Korea expanded, as Chinese Communists intervened on behalf of the communists in North Korea, yet the war rapidly debilitated into a stalemate. The Republicans returned to the White House under the leadership of Dwight Eisenhower. The new president sought a more constructive relationship with the Soviets, and hoped to possibly bring about a “thaw” in the Cold War.
