Part 2: October 14: France and Vietnam, 1946–1954
This lecture focuses on the First Indochina War between French forces and the Viet Minh from 1946 to 1954. It examines the breakdown of negotiations after World War II, the declaration of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and France’s attempt to reassert colonial authority. Students will explore the military strategies of both sides, including guerrilla warfare, political mobilization, and the increasing internationalization of the conflict amid early Cold War tensions. The lecture highlights American financial support for France and the growing importance of anti-communism in shaping policy decisions. The session culminates in the decisive Battle of Dien Bien Phu and the Geneva Accords, which temporarily divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel.
