Part 3: October 21: The United States and the Creation of South Vietnam, 1955–1960
This lecture analyzes how the United States assumed France’s role in supporting a non-communist South Vietnam after 1954. It explores the leadership of Ngo Dinh Diem, the cancellation of nationwide elections, and the consolidation of an anti-communist state in Saigon. Students will assess U.S. nation-building efforts, military advising, and economic assistance programs aimed at containing communism under the Eisenhower administration. The lecture also examines internal opposition within South Vietnam, including Buddhist unrest and the early insurgency that would evolve into the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong). Emphasis is placed on how Cold War ideology shaped American commitments.
