Part 4: October 28: Escalation Under Kennedy and Johnson, 1961–1965
This lecture traces the deepening U.S. involvement in Vietnam during the early 1960s. It covers the expansion of American military advisers, the Strategic Hamlet Program, and the 1963 coup that overthrew Diem. Students will analyze the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the congressional resolution that authorized broader military action. The lecture discusses President Lyndon B. Johnson’s decision to initiate sustained bombing campaigns (Operation Rolling Thunder) and deploy U.S. combat troops in 1965. The session emphasizes the assumptions, fears, and political calculations that drove escalation without a formal declaration of war.
